Mulching works especially well in pine country because the machine can take out understory brush without touching the merchantable timber you want to keep. Ground here is typically sandy loam over clay.
Post oak is slow to replace itself, so selective mulching lets you keep the mature trees for shade and wildlife while clearing everything under them. Ground here is typically sandy loam with tight clay subsoil.
On black clay we watch the weather closely. Mulching on saturated prairie soil tears up ground, so wet-season work gets scheduled around it. Ground here is typically heavy black clay.
Cedar is the whole job out here. Mulching kills it outright at the stump and leaves a mulch layer that holds thin hillside soil in place. Ground here is typically thin rocky caliche over limestone.
